It was the beginning and end that things went awry.
The Cougars got off to a slow start, stumbled down the stretch and lost their season opener 51-41 in both teams' season opener at Lakewood H.S.
Leading 36-30 going into the fourth quarter, Lakewood went ice cold from the field and Tyee heated up, hitting shots on four of its first seven possessions of the fourth quarter to go on a 9-1 run and take its first lead since midway through the second quarter.
After a timeout, Lakewood Chance Schueller hit a 3-pointer to help the Cougars regain the lead, but Tyee's Jaylen Plunkett answered back with a 3 of his own and Tyee took the lead for good. A Ryan Alford free throw got Lakewood to within a point with a little over three mintues to play, but Tyee would end the game on a 9-0 run to win it.
"I thought they got too many offensive rebounds," said first-year Lakewood head coach David Choi. "We couldn't put the ball in the hole in the fourth quarter, but credit to them they made some good defensive adjustments."
Schueller led Lakewood scorers with 12 points and Alford added 10.
Things couldn't have gone any better for Lakewood in the second and third quarters as the Cougars outscored Tyee 29-14. Schueller hit two big 3-pointers out of halftime as Lakewood stretched a three-point halftime lead to 34-23 early in the third quarter. But Tyee scored baskets on its final two possessions to inch closer and give it momentum going into the final quarter.
