A Republican plans to run for the State House of Representatives seat in the 21st Legislative District being vacated by Democrat Marko Liias.
He’s Jeffrey Thorp, who recently won a third term on the Mukilteo School Board.
Liias is giving up the seat to run for the 21st District State Senate seat that four-term Democratic Sen. Paull Shin plans to leave at the end of 2014.
Thorp will be making his second run for the legislature, having lost to Democrat Mike Cooper in 2002.
He is a member of the Washington State School Directors Association, having spent six years on its legislative committee. In addition, he is a member of the National School Board Association’s Federal Relations Network.
Also running for the position is Democrat Lillian Ortiz-Self, a school counselor in Everett, who serves on the governor’s committee on Hispanic Affairs.
Another announced Democratic candidate is Dick McManus, who has declared for other positions in the past but been unable to pay the filing fee.
No opponents have declared to run against Liias or 21st District Democratic State Rep. Mary Helen Roberts.
The 21st Legislative District includes most of Edmonds, unincorporated areas north of Edmonds and Lynnwood, all of Mukilteo, and part of south Everett.
