Frank Yamamoto, a former Edmonds business owner who has served on the council since January 2012, cited health issues after two heart surgeries in the past two years as the reason for stepping down.
"I know that this will be disappointing to those who have supported me, but know that the city is positioned well to move forward in a manner deserving of its residents," Yamamoto said in a resignation letter to city staff.
Yamamoto, 67, told The Herald he intends to focus on recovering from the open heart surgery he had in September before deciding on future plans.
"I had an important job on the council and I took it very seriously but I also take my health very seriously," he said. "If I don't have my health, I don't have anything."
Edmonds Mayor Dave Earling credits Yamamoto with community service such as spearheading the formation of the Edmonds Economic Development Commission prior to his election to the City Council.
"The thing I will miss most is he has a very clear and practical approach to handling issues," Earling said.
Council President Lora Petso said many will remember Yamamoto, an avid runner, for his help in establishing the Edmonds half marathon. Additionally, she said, Yamamoto assisted the council in improving its technology to air meetings live.
Petso said she expects by early next week to have a schedule for finding Yamamoto's replacement. The council will have until March 31 to make its decision.
