Also caught off guard by change

Regarding the letter, "Automatic bank deduction missed": Has this happened to you, too? In 34 years, we have never been late paying our taxes in Snohomish County, so we thought the automatic deduction was a good thing. We had to agree to this, so why weren't we sent a written notice to us individually when it was stopped? A week ago we received a notice from the Snohomish County Treasurer's office that we had not paid our taxes and a fine of over $400 was due along with the full year of taxes! We were told that they did away with the auto deduction last March. We were told that they had sent a notice along with our tax notice. We do not believe that we received this notice, but we had no choice but to pay this fine along with our taxes. Why was there no follow up or notices regarding this? We are furious about this but it seems there is little one can do. Thank you, Bob Ryan, for posting your experience of the same thing ... at least we are not alone!
