Eleanor Walters, a volunteer and board member for the Monroe Cold Weather Shelter Alliance, said the lodging location last year rotated among several places. That made it difficult for those looking for a warm bed.
Now, the shelter offers those in need a place to stay during cold weather in the New Hope Fellowship annex on Main Street in Monroe.
The shelter operates under Monroe's nonprofit community resource center, Take the Next Step, when the forecast predicts the temperature will fall to less than 32 degrees at night through March 15.
Monroe churches, the YMCA, the city and more than 30 volunteers work together to keep the shelter running, Walters said.
The shelter can house up to 10 people per night. Though only about six people have been showing up each night, Walters said, she expects the board to consider expanding its capacity at its meeting Tuesday.
