Lynnwood girls win Nike Northwest Invitational

Royals win Nike Northwest Invitational with 66-54 win over South Medford, a favorite to win 6A Oregon title

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- In a matchup between two of the best girls basketball teams in the Northwest, the Lynnwood one-two punch of Jasmin Edwards and Mikayla Pivec proved to be too much for South Medford.
Edwards and Pivec each scored 22 points to lead the Royals to a 66-54 victory over the Panthers in the final of the Nike Northwest Invitational on Saturday.
"This was a great nonleague victory for us," Lynnwood head coach Everett Edwards said. "South Medford placed second (in the Oregon state tournament) last year and they are (currently) the No. 1 ranked team in 6A and predicted to contend for a state title this season."
Although the Panthers feature Washington State-bound guard Ashley Bolston, it was Jasmin Edwards that was the difference maker, especially in the second half. The Lynnwood senior finished with six assists and four steals and scored 18 of her 22 points over the final two quarters.
"Jasmin really helped us to get separation in the second half," Everett Edwards said. "We were able to spread the court and she was able to penetrate and either finish or dish for an assist."
Pivec provided the Royals an inside presence. Facing a taller South Medford frontline, Pivec was able to grab 14 rebounds, which coach Edwards described as "very helpful."
Both Pivec (8-for-8) and Jasmin Edwards (6-for-6) were perfect at the free throw line as well. Overall, Lynnwood shot 16-for-19 from the charity stripe to help keep the Panthers at bay.
