Teresa Rugg’s Dec. 1 Viewpoints commentary on ending AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria puts the human face on deathly toll of these diseases. (“U.S. help vital to fight against AIDS, TB, malaria.”) These worldwide pandemics put Americans at risk as well. Tuberculosis the airborne disease spreads easily, especially in enclosed spaces like airplanes. Malaria cases have increased in America the past year. The AIDS-free generation is only possible by treating the disease worldwide. So by doing what’s right to fight these diseases globally protects Americans at the same time. The U.S. pledge for $5 billion over the next three years will ensure these killers are brought under control. Citizens explaining this to their representatives will create the political will needed to make this happen.
