Jackson’s Dan Kingma to walk-on to UW men’s hoops team

It looks like there will be two Kingmas playing basketball at the University of Washington next season.

Dan Kingma, whose twin sister Kelli has already committed to the Huskies, has been invited to walk on at Washington next year. Dan announced his decision – and excitement – on Twitter Tuesday night.

“Excited to know I’ll be gettin my education and playing basketball at the University of Washington as a walk-on. Always wanted to be a Husky,” Kingma tweeted.

Kingma had talked to the Washington coaches for the past couple months. They couldn’t offer him a scholarship but gave him the opportunity to walk on to the UW team.

“The coach told me I can plan on going there next year and being a part of the team,” Kingma said. “He came and saw me play. I’ve known coach for a while now and I just told him Washington was a place I’d love to be at. I just thought that’d be a great opportunity for me.”

Dan’s older sister Kristi also played at Washington. Dan Kingma grew up going to Huskies’ games and attended even more with his older sister at the school.

“I’ve been to U-Dub hundreds of times for basketball games,” Kingma said. “My sister’s games, and growing up going to men’s games. I know the place pretty well.”

He’s also excited to have another sibling with him after his senior year at Jackson.

“That’ll be awesome to be going there with Kelli being on the girl’s team,” Kingma said. “Kristi said nothing but good things about U-Dub. I know going to Washington will be an awesome experience.”

Kingma is a 5-foot, 10-inch point guard for a Jackson team that finished second at the 4A state tournament last season. With a good portion of the team back, the Timberwolves have high expectations this season.

Many of those expectations stem from the return of Kingma and his good friend, Jackson star Jason Todd. Todd recently committed to the University of Portland.

Along with Washington, Kingma had talked to Whitworth, Whitman and Seattle Pacific University about playing basketball after high school, a goal that he had for himself.

But it was Washington where Kingma was hoping to end up all along.

“I just thought that Washington was such a good opportunity for me,” Kingma said. “I’m just going to do whatever I can do to be a positive influence on the program.”
