DUPONT — The Washington State Patrol said a fatal, fiery crash on I-5 south of Tacoma was caused by a northbound pickup that crossed the median and collided with two southbound trucks.
Trooper Guy Gill said both southbound trucks caught fire. Two people in a box van were able to walk away before it burned. The driver of a semi-truck died as the trailer burned. The driver of the pickup was taken to Madigan Army Medical Center with serious injuries.
Gill said he did not appear to be impaired and why he crossed the median remains under investigation.
The crash at 10:15 a.m. near DuPont blocked southbound traffic for eight miles into the afternoon. One lane opened about 12:15 p.m. Northbound traffic slowed because of the emergency.
