Richard Sherman earns player of the week honors; plus Wednesday links

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in his career. Sherman had a pair of interceptions in Sunday’s win over the New York Giants, and also had an “assist” on an Earl Thomas interception, and his six interceptions this season are tied for a league high. Sherman’s 14 interceptions in the last two seasons also lead the NFL.

And speaking of Sherman, he wrote a piece for TheMMQB.com on why he doesn’t think a cold-weather Super Bowl is a good idea, even adverse conditions might favor his team.

Continuing with the theme of Seattle’s defensive backs, the New York Times dug into some advanced stats, and comes away with the conclusion that Seattle’s pass defense isn’t just good, it’s one of the best ever.

FieldGulls.com also looks at Seattle secondary, in particular the team’s ability to develop talent.

Russell Wilson is now an official spokesperson for Alaska Airlines, which means between now and whenever the Seahawks season ends, anyone wearing a Wilson jersey gets priority boarding.

You probably remember that Seahawks fans paid to have a 12th Man flag flown above Candlestick Park a couple weeks ago? Well now some 49ers fans have pooled their money to purchase a billboard in Seattle reminding Seahawks fans of the titles they don’t have.

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News writes about the competitive tension between 49ers GM Trent Baalke and coach Jim Harbaugh.

In other 49ers news, here is, depending on your point of view, an either adorable or kind of disturbing letter from a young 49ers fan warning the Seahawks they’d better not win this week.
