Richard Sherman on DPOY race, "idiot" draft analysts, Larry Fitzgerald and more

A big topic this week has been the depth the Seahawks have at cornerback, especially considering all of their cornerbacks are mid to late-round picks. So how have they found so many draft-weekend steals? Easy, says Richard Sherman. They don't listen to the idiots.

"It helps when you don’t listen to the idiots in the draft room," said Sherman, a fifth-round pick turned first-team All-Pro. "When you don’t listen to the idiots, you find players like Jeremy Lane and Byron Maxwell and Byron Maxwell and myself and Kam Chancellor, the list goes on, Russell Wilson. But if you sit there and listen to the idiots like Mel Kiper and Todd McShay and things like that, you miss a lot of good players."

On Brandon Browner's suspension: "I’ll let the legal system figure that out. He’s got all my support, we’re with him."

On having a quarterback actually throw his direction after a couple of quiet weeks: "It’s fun when you’re actually part of the game and you get to make some plays, get a chance to make a play on the ball. . . Just being able to see the ball come your way exciting, and it’s good to see my teammates like Byron Maxwell and Jeremy Lane play as well as they did, to get to showcase their talents and do everything they did in that game, creating turnovers and playing a good sound football game."

On who would get his defensive player of the year vote: "I would have to give it to Earl. If there’s anywhere the defensive player of the year should be, it should be in Seattle, whether it’s myself or Earl. But I think Earl’s having a fantastic year, he’s leading the team in tackles, or I think Bobby might have just surpassed him this week, but he’s having a fantastic year. He’s flying around tackling everywhere, forcing fumbles, getting interceptions. I don’t think there’s anybody out playing better defense. Our defense is No. 1 in the league, so usually the quarterback with the best record and the best receives isn’t punished for that, so don’t punish one of the best players on the best defense. I think he should get it."

On facing Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald: "He’s one of the best players to ever play in this league. His résumé speaks for itself. You give him a tremendous amount of respect, and you also give the guy on the other side of him (Michael Floyd) a tremendous amount of respect for the things they’ve been able to do this season with the explosive plays, the big catches. They’re both right at or really close to 1,000 yards, and that isn’t easy to do in this league. Two receivers with 1,000 yards is tough."

On Seattle leading the league in points and yards allowed: "I think we’re finally getting close to playing up to our potential in every phase, all three levels of defense. The D-line is playing outstanding, the pass rush is there, the run defense is there; the linebackers, even though we’ve had an injury to K.J. that’s a big blow to our defense, they’re still making big plays, good in run defense, good in pass coverage; and in the secondary we’re playing top-down and trying to eliminate the explosive plays. All of that together helps create a very sound and stout defense."
