When rivalry one-upmanship becomes a very good thing; plus Thursday links
A group of San Francisco fans have responded by raising funds to buy a billboard near CenturyLink Field bragging about the 49ers’ five Super Bowl titles. A cool footnote to that effort is that any excess money those fans raise will be donated to Seattle Children’s Hospital.
The enemy giving money to a local charity? This act of aggression cannot stand! At least that was the opinion of some Seahawks fans, who decided that if 49ers fans are going to give money to Seattle Children’s Hospital, then Seahawks fans should raise money for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.
Seriously, how cool is this? One team’s fans trying to one-up a rival team’s fans through charitable donations? Good stuff to everyone involved. Let’s hope this part of the rivalry continues its back-and-forth.
And now onto some links.
The big news Wednesday was obviously that of Brandon Browner’s suspension.
And related to that, a column looking at how the Seahawks have cultivated so much depth at cornerback so as to be able to continue a high-level of play despite Browner and Walter Thurmond’s absences.
Fox Sports’ Mike Garafalo has more detail on Browner’s plan to fight the suspension further, as does Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports.
Garafalo also notes on Twitter that the Seahawks won’t be bringing back Antoine Winfield following Browner’s suspension. That’s hardly a surprise considering how well Seattle’s other corners are playing, and with Walter Thurmond’s suspension ending after Sunday’s game, they’ll need to make room on the roster for him anyway if they add someone in the interim to fill Browner’s spot.
NFL.com has Russell Wilson third in its weekly quarterback rankings.
Doug Farrar of SI.com catches up with Seahawks punter Jon Ryan on the topic of punters being considered defenseless throughout the play. That’s been a big talking point this week following the serious injury suffered by Bengals punter Kevin Huber on a nasty block Sunday night.
Danny O’Neil of 710 ESPN Seattle looks at Seattle’s struggles in the running game.
Dave Boling of the News Tribune looks at the much-improved Cardinals, who don’t look much like the team the Seahawks easily handled in Arizona earlier this season.
