SEATTLE — Head coach Chris Petersen continues to build his first coaching staff at Washington, according to reports.
Boise State quarterbacks coach Jonathan Smith, who played collegiately at Oregon State, will reportedly join Petersen’s staff at UW, according to Dawgman.com.
It’s unclear what that means for Marques Tuiasosopo, UW’s interim head coach who coached quarterbacks this season.
Football Scoop reported that Bob Gregory, who is currently serving as BSU’s interim head coach, is also thought to be heading to Washington after the teams play their bowl games. Gregory coached linebackers at Boise State this season.
Previous reports indicated that current Boise State assistant coaches Pete Kwiatkowski (defensive coordinator), Jimmy Lake (defensive backs) and Chris Strausser (offensive line) will join Petersen’s staff, and running backs coach Keith Bhonapha has already arrived at UW.
Smith is a familiar name to Huskies fans. As OSU’s quarterback in 1998, he broke a single-game UW opponent record by throwing for 469 yards in a close loss at Husky Stadium.
Wallace transfers
Redshirt freshman defensive back Cleveland Wallace became the first player to transfer from UW since coach Steve Sarkisian’s departure. The UW confirmed Wallace has left the program.
Wallace appeared in nine games this season and made one interception. Wallace’s position coach, Keith Heyward, followed Sarkisian to USC.
The recruiting website 247 Sports reported that Wallace plans to enroll at San Jose State.
Female officials
The Fight Hunger Bowl will make history with two female officials this year.
The game between BYU and Washington on Dec. 27 in San Francisco will be called by a crew from Conference USA that includes Sarah Thomas as line judge and Maia Chaka as head linesman.
NCAA national coordinator of officials Rogers Redding says it is the first time two female officials have worked the same FBS game.
