Everett boys hold off Getchell to improve to 2-0 in league

MARYSVILLE — Coming off of a season in which it won just six games, the Everett boys basketball teams is still figuring out how to close out opponents.

It showed Thursday night.

Despite taking an 13-point lead into the final quarter, the Seagulls needed some late free throws and a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer by Marysville Getchell to hold on and win 59-57 at Marysville Getchell H.S.

For these guys they’re still learning how to play down the stretch,” said Everett head coach John Richer. “I thought tonight there were a couple of possessions we did some things that we need to do better in the future. I’m just glad these guys can experience that success as we build.”

Everett nearly blew its chance to improve to 2-0 in Wesco 3A North play. Trailing by 13, Marysville Getchell forced Everett into seven turnovers and Kaleb Seymer scored nine points of a 16-3 run by the Chargers that tied the score at 54 with just over a minute to play.

But after the two teams traded possessions, Everett went to its star to regain the lead. The Seagulls executed a back-door alley-oop to perfection to senior wing Jace Chacon, who finished with a layin to give Everett the lead and only its second basket of the quarter.

Chacon finished with a game-high 27 points.

“There are two screens on that play and they were solidly set and it made the defense have to make a choice on who they want to guard, so the execution was good all the way around,” Richer said.

Marysville Getchell wasn’t done, however. After David Popach made two free throws to stretch Everett’s lead to four points, the Chargers came right back as Seymer drove to the hoop, made the layin and was fouled with 8.4 seconds to play. Seymer made the free throw to draw MG to within a point.

Everett was fouled on the next possession and missed the front end of a one-and-one. But Seagulls senior Nick Kopp jumped around the Getchell player on the block and tied up the rebound for a jump ball and Seagulls’ possession. Everett would take a few more seconds off the clock and hit one of two free throws to set up the final heave by Marysville Getchell that bounced off the rim.

Seymer scored 22 points to lead Marysville Getchell and Nathen Grimm added 21 and four 3-pointers.

Everett, which is one win shy of equaling its win total from a year ago, plays a pair of 4A schools in Mount Vernon and Lynnwood over the holiday break before returning to league play against unbeaten Stanwood and second-place Marysville Pilchuck in the first week of January.

“That’s a tough stretch; we definitely have to get better,” Richer said.
