Shop till they drop

For your 3:15 a.m. gift-buying convenience: Trying to salvage what's been a disappointing Christmas season for sales, some big-box retailers are remaining open nonstop until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

So if on Christmas Day you notice a hollow-eyed, ghostly figure stumbling along in a state of utter exhaustion, it'll probably be a cashier at the local Kohl's.

The oldest profession: Canada's Supreme Court on Friday struck down all three of the country's anti-prostitution laws: bans on keeping a brothel, making a living from prostitution, and street soliciting. The ruling that drew fire from the nation's conservative federal government and religious leaders who warn it could lead to increased human trafficking.

The decision was hailed by sex workers, who argued it would make their profession less dangerous, and by Toronto's sort-of Mayor Rob Ford -- once he was assured he wasn't just imagining things while in a drunken stupor.

Don't know much about history: On this day in 1913, the first newspaper crossword puzzle was published in the New York World.

We're guessing the puzzle remains unsolved to this day, since the clue for 10 down was "The fibre of the gomuti palm."*
