EUGENE, Ore. — A professor at the University of Oregon is among those working on a project to develop a better condom.
The Eugene Register-Guard reported that Richard Chartoff is a polymer scientist who wants to make an ultra-thin polyurethane condom that would shrink to fit like an extra layer of skin.
Chartoff’s concept is one of 11 ideas that have received a $100,000 exploration grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Projects could receive additional funding up to $1 million.
The Seattle-based Gates Foundation issued a challenge to scientists after finding that men prefer not to wear condoms. The idea is to increase condom use, especially in developing countries, to help prevent disease and unplanned pregnancies.
