Dick Clark's going to be sorry he missed this: A judge declined to stop a North Carolina town's planned New Year's Eve celebration, in which a caged possum is lowered at midnight. PETA had protested that the noise, lights and crowd disturb the possum.

Had PETA prevailed, the possum would have been freed as "Born Free" played, then allowed to run into the road and be flattened by traffic.
