Prep girls basketball: Stanwood 59, Issaquah 42
But once they warmed up, the shots -- many of the 3-point variety -- started dropping.
Stanwood was 10-of-17 from behind-the-arc and its defense didn't allow an Issaquah player to score more than nine points as the Spartans defeated the Eagles 59-42 Thursday night in the final game of the day of the Snohomish Holiday Basketball Tournament.
"When the ball goes in the basket, you play with more enthusiasm. The ball went in the basket," said Stanwood head coach Dennis Kloke.
Junior Julia Heichel had a game-high 18 points for Stanwood, which also got big contributions by Haley Strowbridge (14 points), Samantha Powell (13) and Jillian Jacobs (six).
They helped Stanwood (5-1 overall) pick up right where it left off before its Christmas break.
"Last year we struggled in the first game (after Christmas)," Kloke said. "We woke up the next few games. It is an advantage having experience and I've got seniors."
The Spartans, which only featured one senior last season, have four on this year's squad.
