VICTORIA, B.C. — The Everett Silvertips and Victoria Royals played to an impasse Wednesday afternoon. So it all came down to the skills competition.
Jack Walker was the only person to find the back of the net the entire contest, scoring the lone goal of the shootout as the Royals defeated the Tips 1-0.
The teams, who played a night game in Everett on Tuesday night before making the ferry trip to play the day game Wednesday in Victoria, skated to a scoreless tie through three periods and overtime, with scoring chances few and far between. Then Victoria won the shootout 1-0.
Patrik Polivka made 24 saves and stopped all three of Everett’s shootout attempts to lead Victoria (27-13-0-2), which swept the home-and-home set and has won six straight.
Austin Lotz turned aside all 29 shots he faced in goal for Everett (23-12-4-1), which at least salvaged a point from the two games.
Everett lost its captain, defenseman Matt Pufahl, during the third period. Pufahl had to be helped off the ice after blocking a shot. Everett was already missing its other two overagers, forwards Joshus Winquist and Manraj Hayer, because of concussions.
Little of consequence took place in the first period as there were no goals and no penalties.
Everett put the puck into the net early in the second period when Tyler Sandhu tipped in Pufahl’s shot from the point. But the goal was immediately waived off for being touched by a high stick. After a long video review the ruling was upheld, and it remained scoreless going into the third.
Victoria picked up its play in the third, outshining Everett 17-7 in the period. However, Lotz was up to the task, making a big glove save on Ben Walker early in the period to keep it scoreless. Lotz then made a pair of stops on Steven Hodges in overtime to get the game to the shootout.
