Comic book art by popular Japanese manga artist Yoshimi Kurata will be displayed from Jan. 9 through 31 at in Everett Community College's Russell Day Gallery.
Kurata plans to demonstrate his illustration techniques on a large screen at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 8 in Whitehorse Hall on the college campus, 2000 Tower St., Everett.
He also plans to talk about the exhibit of his work at a reception from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the gallery, in Parks Student Union. The demonstration and reception are open to the public.
The exhibit features Kurata's "Aji Ichimonme" series, which was first published in 1986 and is now in its fourth series in Japanese magazines.
The series was made into a popular TV series of the same name. The series debuted in Japan in 1995 and was broadcast again in 2011 and 2013. The heartwarming stories are set in Japanese restaurants.
"This exhibit is a rare and wonderful opportunity for visitors to meet and see the work of a gifted manga artist from Japan," gallery director Greg Kammer said.
Manga, the Japanese comic books, are often made into cartoons, or anime.
Kurata was born in 1954 in Akita city, and was influenced by the natural beautify of the prefecture. When he was a child, Kuratae was hospitalized for two months. His uncle gave him 1,000 sheets of drawing paper to help save him from boredom.
Today, Kurata has illustrated more than 30 books.
In 1999, he won the 44th Shogakkan manga award in the general youth manga artist category. He teaches a course at Otemae University in Osaka, participates in the International Manga Summit and recently created the East Asia Manga Research Association to nurture young manga artists and promote manga and cultural exchanges.
The Russell Day Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays.
