CHICAGO -- Seattle University women's basketball team built a large lead in the first half and kept it with solid defense, defeating Chicago State 85-58 on Thursday night in the Western Athletic Conference opner for both teams.
"It was a good way to start the conference season," Seattle U coach Joan Bonvicini said. "The first win is (key), especially on the road, and I'm proud of our players. We really showed our inside game and hit some 3's as well. The big thing is to build on this and continue to go a game at a time."
Kacie Sowell led the Redhawks with a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Teammates Sylvia Shephard and Taelor Ross each scored 12 points. Shepherd is now just five points away from becoming the 14th player in Seattle U history to surpass 1,000 career points.
Ashley Ward and Wilma Afunugo (10 points apiece) also scored in double figures for the Redhawks (6-8, 1-0 WAC). Callin Nix and Tierra Williams led the Cougars (2-11, 0-1 WAC) with 15 points apiece.
