Man charged with felony for alleged assault on toddler

EVERETT — A little girl’s broken bones have led to felony charges against her mother’s boyfriend.

The girl was 21-months-old when her mother brought her to an Everett hospital on Dec. 7, according to the charges filed Friday by Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Matt Hunter.

Due to the severity of her injuries, the girl was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit at Seattle Children’s Hospital, where she underwent surgery.

Medical tests showed fractures to her left leg, right eye socket and her jaw. She had facial bruises consistent with someone who has been punched, according to the charges.

Doctors also found a healing broken rib that was “suggestive of past abuse” and signs of previous abdominal trauma.

Ladd Vaughn Lundeen, 29, reportedly told police the girl had been crying, causing him to “lose it with her.” Prosecutors allege Lundeen was using heroin and alcohol while babysitting the girl when her mother was at work.

He is accused of picking the girl up and throwing her down a hallway, where she struck a door frame. She then was thrown into the playpen.

Lundeen was charged Friday with second-degree assault of a child. He has felony convictions for forgery and theft from 2008, court papers show. He also has 13 misdemeanor convictions, mostly for drugs, alcohol and driving offenses.

Since his Dec. 11 arrest, Lundeen has been at the Snohomish County Jail on $150,000 bail. If convicted as charged, he faces nearly five years in prison.
