Big first half leads Stanwood boys past Everett

Drew Stang scores 16 to lead Spartans to 65-50 3A North league win

STANWOOD -- An early league matchup between Stanwood and Everett, two teams undefeated in league play coming into Friday, turned into the Spartans showing why they are considered the team to beat in the Wesco 3A North.
Stanwood raced out to an 18-point halftime lead and held off the Seagulls to earn a 65-50 win.
"I think our offensive execution was good and we were able to turn them over, which lead to easy transition buckets," Stanwood head coach Zach Ward said of his team's first-half performance.
Drew Stang scored 16 points to lead Stanwood, with Josh Thayer (14 points), Brady Garcea (12) and Skout Roberson (12) adding balance to the Spartans offense. Roberson also grabbed 11 rebounds and Ward described the junior's performance as vital to the Spartans improving to 10-0 on the season.
"(Everett) was definitely trying to key in on a couple of other players, but (Roberson) stepped up and filled the void," Ward said.
The Seagulls' David Popach made five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points. Everett's other offensive threat, Jace Chacon, added nine points, but was held scoreless in the first half as the Seagulls mustered just 17 total points.
"We definitely focused on Chacon and Popach," Ward said. "Popach got loose in the second half ... but all in all I think we did a great job."
