MILL CREEK — A quick start by Drew Locknane and a strong finish from Imari Clinton paced Jackson to a 49-47 win over a short-handed Snohomish squad in a Wesco 4A crossover game on Tuesday night.
Locknane’s two first quarter 3-pointers gave the Timberwolves the early advantage, while Clinton connected on her team-high 11 points and three 3s, all in the second half.
“They were daring our girls to shoot in the first quarter,” said Jackson head coach Mark Haner. “Drew stepped up early and Imari stepped up in the second half.”
Despite an 11-point lead in the third quarter the short-handed Panthers, playing without Callie Harwood and Madison Pollock, took advantage of multiple Jackson turnovers and narrowly missed the comeback win.
“We found out that Callie and Maddy weren’t going to play just before the game,” said Haner. “Our focus went to Maddy Smith, who had an outstanding game. She’s really aggressive and we had to switch to zone to stop her. We made it a point late to take the post away from her.”
Smith finished with a game-high 18 points for the Panthers.
Haner admitted despite his team typically scoring in the 70s that it the game was more about not converting on missed opporunities than the overall pace of the game.
“I wouldn’t characterize it as not our pace,” Haner said when describing the difference of the Timberwolves previous high-scoring games this season. “They were throwing the kitchen sink at us defensively. We were pushing the ball up the court, but we just weren’t getting the looks we wanted.”
