The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has finalized its 2014-16 reclassification numbers and it looks like Wesco will have a new look for the next two years.
According to Marysville School District athletic director Greg Erickson, Wesco 4A will be a single eight-team league while Wesco 3A will become a large 13-team league with two divisions featuring one 2A team in Shorecrest. The Scots didn’t opt up to 3A after coming in just under the cap and will compete in the 2A classification next season.
The biggest names moving down to 3A are Edmonds-Woodway and Arlington. The Warriors haven’t been 3A since 1998-99, two years after the inception of the 4A classification, and the Eagles haven’t been in 3A since 2007-08. Lynnwood will also be re-joining 3A after jumping to 4A in the last cycle.
The three schools join the 10-team Wesco 3A. Erickson said league athletic directors will discuss divisions for Wesco 3A at a league meeting today. A best guess for the breakdown of division would be Arlington joining Everett, the two Marysville schools, Oak Harbor and Stanwood in the North, and Edmonds-Woodway and Lynnwood joinging Glacier Peak, the two Shoreline schools, and the other two Edmonds School District schools, Meadowdale and Mountlake Terrace, in the South.
No Wesco teams moved up to the 4A classification, dropping Wesco 4A from 11 teams to eight. Those eight teams are Cascade, Jackson, Kamiak, Lake Stevens, Mariner, Monroe, Mount Vernon, Snohomish.
Early indications had Marysville Getchell and Glacier Peak on the brink of moving up to 4A. But the Chargers will remain in 3A and keep its intra-city rivalry with Marysville Pilchuck alive and well. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, will remain in 3A and not unite with its rival Snohomish in Wesco 4A.
In the Cascade Conference the general structure remains the same, but it looks like Sultan moves to 1A.
The new classification figures will be used for two seasons with another reclassification occuring prior to the 2016-17 season.
