Girls from 15-18 are invited to apply for the free Girls on Ice program this summer. The deadline is Jan. 30.
The program takes two groups of nine teens on an adventure with three mentors. One group goes to Mount Baker and the other explores a glacier in Alaska. Preference is given on the Alaska trip for girls from the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
The teens and their instructors will explore glaciers and learn about the alpine landscape with scientists, guides and artists.
The program is not necessarily looking for teens with the best and brightest achievements. Instead, they are looking at the group as a whole and attempting to build a group with a diversity of strengths, backgrounds and interests. The program is — amazingly — free. The teens will need to have transportation to Fairbanks or Seattle and a minimum amount of clothing. The program will offer as much financial assistance as possible, though, to assist those who need it. The technical equipment and clothing needed will be provided.
