MONROE — An inmate at the Monroe Correctional Complex was rushed to a local hospital Friday after being stabbed by another inmate.
The victim, a 33-year-old man, was expected to survive, Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said.
The suspect, 21-year-old Brian D. Rivas, remained in state Department of Corrections custody.
The stabbing was reported at 12:23 p.m. in the Washington State Reformatory, one of four units inside the prison. The suspect was believed to have used “some type of homemade weapon,” Willis said.
The victim suffered multiple stab wounds, corrections spokeswoman Norah West said. The stabbing happened during an altercation between the inmates in a living-area stairwell, she said.
Prison officials limited inmates’ activities for some time after the incident. Visiting also was closed for several hours Friday.
Rivas was moved to a maximum-security unit while the investigation into Friday’s assault continues, West said.
Rivas is serving a 17-year sentence for a first-degree assault from Pierce County.
