ARLINGTON — A team defensive effort by the Kamiak boosted the Knights to a 51-48 upset victory over undefeated and Wesco 4A North leader Arlington on Tuesday night.
“We just played really hard,” Kamiak head coach Brian Norman said. “They laid it out there and I just let them play.”
After giving up 17 points in the first quarter, Norman made the switch to a 2-3 zone, holding the Eagles to just 19 points in the second and third quarter. Kamiak’s defensive switch made it difficult for Arlington to feed their low post scorer Lyndsay Leatherman, who led all scorers with 15 points.
“Defensively we frustrated them, we were aggressive and physical, and we never backed down,” Norman said. “We really focused on giving effort and helping down on Leatherman. We did a great job of not making it easy on them and keeping the pressure on.”
Senior Nora Aboulhosn led Kamiak in scoring with 11, but Norman commended his players for their unselfish attitude and team first mentality. Not known for its offense, Kamiak had contributions from every player on both the offensive and defensive end.
“We had a lot of key players tonight.” Norman said. “We arent a great shooting team but it was a combined total effort. We are starting to play with more confidence and this win gives us even more.”
The win improves Kamiak to 6-3 in league and 8-6 overall. Even with the loss Arlington still holds a two-game lead over Snohomish in the Wesco 4A north.
