SNOHOMISH — The Snohomish wrestling team’s solid start and strong finish were enough to overcome a slight hiccup in the middle as the Panthers knocked off Arlington 42-24 on Thursday.
“It was definitely a tale of two diffenent halves of a match,” Snohomish head coach Rob Zabel said. “I felt like we got off to a quick start…and we ended with a technical fall and three pins… but it was a little bumpy in between.”
The Panthers’ Tristan Baus opened the Wesco 4A North clash with a pin of Adalberto Ramos at 220 pounds and a subsequent disqualification win for Alex Fairhurst at 285 gave Snohomish an early 12-0 lead.
But the Eagles went on a tear, winning six of the next eight matches, including pins by Trey Swanson (106) and Jeremy Nygard (113). Arlington also was able to prevail in the tight contests, scoring three one-point decision victories and one two-point win.
“I felt like we couldn’t win the close matches,” Zabel said. “They had some kids that finished matches and we didn’t.”
Sawyer Sahlinger stopped Arlington’s run with a 16-1 technical fall result over George Spady in the 160-pound contest. With the score tied at 24-24, Mark Currier, Garrett Stich and Justin Kearney each recorded pins to close out the match in the Panthers’ favor.
Despite the seemingly comfortable margin of victory, Zabel thought the result was closer than it looked.
“It looks like we won by 18 points, but in terms of match wins, it was (only) 8-6.
