Regarding the letter, “Where is the outcry over testing?”: I also was horrified by the article about the captive monkeys being abused. Yes, abused. The thing that I wonder is when are humans the world over going to get over our feelings of entitlement and superiority over the animal kingdom?
Some humans are starting to get it, but most still don’t or just don’t care. Animals, including humans, do have the ability to think and feel pain. Animals have the ability to feel empathy and fear. Animals know when they are being abused and are smart enough to show fear. The article stated as much.
I am not unaware that humans are at the top of the food chain, but this should not give us the authority to abuse any living creature for any reason. This also includes our food folks.
The laws need to be changed so that experiments, for whatever reason, can only be done on the recipients that will benefit from those experiments; i.e,. humans for humans, dogs for dogs, etc. Only then will we, as humans, truly become more than “savages.”
