LYNNWOOD — Mountlake Terrace senior forward Greg Bowman made the go-ahead basket on a putback with 20 seconds remaining as Mountlake Terrace avoided the upset by defeating Meadowdale 42-41 in a Wesco 3A South game on Thursday night.
“So many basketball games are won or lost on offensive rebounds,” said Hawks head coach Nalin Sood. “Greg didn’t give up on that final play and that was really the difference maker. He’s a great player that’s having a great year.”
Bowman finished the game with nine points and fellow senior Loren Locasse led all Mountlake Terrace scorer’s with 17 points in the win.
The Mavericks started the game hot, taking an 18-14 lead heading into the second quarter. Meadowdale however would be held to just 21 points in the final 24 minutes.
“I give credit to Meadowdale,” Sood said. “Against a team like them you got to grind it out. Defensively we played more aggressively and we really picked things up in the second quarter.
Barrett Carlow led the Mavs’ with a game-high 25 points, but Sood admitted that his team’s priority was to shut down Meadowdale’s other offensive weapons.
“They got other guys besides Carlow,” Sood said. “Over is a shooter, Perkins is good, (Charlie) White is a tough matchup and a physical kid. They definitely have more more than one weapon.”
Despite a busy week, with the victory Mountlake Terrace (7-2 league, 12-4 overall) remains in a tie with Glacier Peak a top the Wesco 3A South standings.
“This was our third game in four nights,” Sood said. “Something would be wrong if that was pretty for us.”
