EVERETT — Clinging to a three-point lead, the Mariner wrestling team reeled off three straight victories to end Thursday night’s Wesco 4A South match and hang on for a 40-27 win over Edmonds-Woodway at Mariner H.S.
The loss was the Warriors’ first league loss in more than three years, according to E-W coach Brian Alfi.
“I thought our kids wrestled really well tonight,” said Mariner head coach Carl Wilkins.
“We knew it would be closer this year. We’re glad to beat them. … We’re young and we’re building and beating Edmonds is nice any time. We don’t dislike them, we just like beating them.”
The Marauders (2-1 4A South, 6-2 overall) led 30-27 heading into the 113-pound match. Following Anthony Carrillo’s 4-1 decision over Sidat Kanyi, Tristan Huggins beat E-W’s Gabe Baltazar 13-1 for a major decision at 120 that sealed the victory. Huggins controlled the match from the outset and never gave Baltazar an inch in an impressive outing.
“The thing I was proud of Tristan tonight was the fact he got better as the match went on,” Wilkins said. “Their kid knew what was at stake and knew he needed to catch Tristan and Tristan stopped any of those situations from happening. He settled down and wrestled from good, fundamental positions.”
Mariner 126-pounder Kevin Mach’s come-from-behind 6-2 victory over Nathan Nash ended the match.
The win puts Lynnwood (3-0) in the driver’s seat for the league title with two matches to go. Edmonds-Woodway (2-1) hosts the Royals on Tuesday in a match that could decide the league title.
“Everybody is really close to each other this year,” Alfi said of the 4A South. “We’ve all got some holes and some really strong kids.”
