Outdoor events: Birds, first aid, fossils, skiing, more

For students: EvCC’s Ocean Research College Academy will have an open house at 6 p.m. on Thursday at its waterfront location, 1205 Craftsman Way, Suite 203, Everett. ORCA is an early college academy for high school students, who can earn up to two years of college credit while completing their high school education. Fossils and the Future: Dr. Kirk Johnson, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History director, will present his program “The Real Seattle Underground: Rocks, Fossils, and the Future of the Pacific Northwest;” at 7 p.m. Friday at Meany Hall at the University of Washington. Eagles: The Arlington-Stillaguamish Eagle Festival is Friday and Saturday. There will be guided tours, educational events, wine tasting, art, paddle trips and more. Check out all the details here.

For ladies: The GRO Snow Ladies Day is Saturday at Stevens Pass. Ski and ride with other women and enjoy goodies and try your luck in the raffle. Get more info here.

Bird trip: Edmonds Parks and Recreation is offering a field trip on Feb. 8 to the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge near Olympia. It’s $47 for Edmonds residents and $54 for non-residents. Call 425-771-0230 for more information or to register.

Snowboarding: The YMCA is offering a 3-day snowboarding class for kids ages 11-17 on Feb. 14-16. The event is at the Mount Baker Bibleway Camp. It’s $329 for members and $359 for non-members. Scramble: Learn how to reach many of the peaks in the Cascades. Scrambling is like hiking, but with more time off trail and more clambering over rock or snow. Learn how to do it safely with an Everett Mountaineers class that begins on Feb. 20. Learn more here.

Lynx and hare: Learn about lynx and snowshoe hare at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Northwest Stream Center. Researcher Aaron Wirsing will tell what he’s learned about these interesting species. The event is $5 for members and $7 for nonmembers. Get more info here.

Expo: The Northwest Outdoor Adventure Expo is Feb. 28-March 2 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. There will be discussions, slide shows, music and indoor adventures such as a zip line and paddle pool. There will also be a variety of outdoor vendors. Get more info here.

Go paddling: The Washington Water Trails Association will offer a guided paddle on March 1 on the Sammamish River. Attendees will meet in Woodinville and then paddle or row to Red Hook Brewery and enjoy lunch before returning. Get more info here.
