Seattle’s Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home four Grammy awards last night, but they also delivered one of the most powerful, emotional and important performances in Grammy history.
Thirty-three couples — gay, straight, mixed race — were married during the performance of “Same Love,” and watching those couples put rings on their fingers and wipe away their tears while some of the biggest stars in music sang to them made it feel like the Grammys actually meant something this year.
It is pretty amazing that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have been able to rise to the heights they have in the last year as independent artists. The really beautiful part is that when their success got them all the way to biggest stage in music, they decided to take that opportunity to stand up for what they believe in.
Yeah, Madonna looked crazy in that hat and I’m not sure what the cane was about, but if you weren’t holding back tears when Queen Latifah was marrying those couples and Madonna and Everett’s own Mary Lambert stood center stage singing together, then maybe you weren’t paying attention.
