Murder, assault charges filed in man’s death

SEATTLE ó A 22-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a 96-year-old Seattle-area man with the manís own gun and bashing the manís granddaughter a dozen times with a crowbar has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree assault.
King County prosecutors charged Shane Chamberlain on Tuesday in Saturdayís attack on Philip Hamlin and his granddaughter, Bethany Hamlin. The woman was treated for her injuries.
Chamberlainís bail was set at $2 million, with arraignment scheduled Feb. 10.
In court papers, prosecutors say Chamberlain attacked Bethany Hamlin as she vacuumed at her grandfatherís house in the south Seattle suburb of Normandy Park. She defended herself with a metal chair and ran to a neighborís house. Prosecutors say Chamberlain searched for Philip Hamlinís revolver, shot the elderly man twice, then called 911 to say what he had done.
Police say Chamberlainís wife worked as Philip Hamlinís caregiver.
It was not known late Tuesday whether Chamberlain has a lawyer.
