MONROE — Monroe girls basketball head coach Matt Chalfant wanted a frenetic effort on defense and he got it Friday against Snohomish.
The Bearcats held the Panthers to 14 points in the first half and toughed out a 46-34 win that moved Monroe into a tie for second place in the Wesco 4A North.
“It came down for defense for us,” Chalfant said. “We wanted chaos. We got in Snohomish’s face. It was something we preached all week and I think it gave them some problems.”
The Bearcats’ Deidra Miller scored 13 points to lead all scorers. Jadynn Alexander added 10 points and Jordyn Turner and Amber Van Brunt each chipped in with nine to provide the bulk of Monroe’s offense. Chalfant said Miller and Turner, the two Bearcats honored on senior night, also provided an emotional lift.
“Turner and Miller absolutely got us fired up .. they wouldn’t let us quit,” Chalfant said.
Callie Harwood led the Panthers with 12 points, but Snohomish missed an opportunity to clinch second place. Instead, Monroe, Snohomish and Lake Stevens are all still in the hunt to finish behind league champion Arlington.
