Tulalip Heritage wins Northwest 1B title with win over Lummi

BELLINGHAM — A game-high 18-point performance from senior Shawn Sanchey helped Tulalip Heritage clinch the Northwest 1B regular season title with a 56-50 win over Lummi Nation.

A playoff-like atmosphere filled the gym as the two teams battled to take the season series, tied at one win a piece.

“Shawn is our senior leader,” Tulalip Heritage head coach Marlin Fryberg Jr said. “I told him that he is our leader so he needs to step up, and he hit some clutch shots.”

The Hawks built a 28-19 lead at the half, but a 19-10 third quarter in favor of the Blackhawks tied the score at 38. Down the stretch the Hawks were able to make the big shots and road their momentum to a six-point victory.

“We just kept running our offense,” Fryberg Jr said. “We believe in our shooters and we knocked down some big three-pointers. Basketball is about momentum and you need momentum to win the game.”

Keanu Hamilton scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Hawks. Trazil Lane lead a balanced Blackhawk scoring attack with 12 points in the loss.

“We are good rivals and we have a lot of fun when we play,” Fryberg Jr. said of the conference rivalry. “It’s like we are neighborhood communities, when we have a game everyone comes out to support their team.”
