Wildlife artist and photographer Bart Rulon spent more than 200 hours photographing the prolific 2011-2012 season for snowy owls in Washington state.
Rulon is presenting a free slide presentation and talk about the owls at the Whidbey Audubon Society’s public program Thursday evening at Trinity Lutheran Church’s gym at Highway 525 and Woodward in Freeland.
Rulon, an award-winning wildlife artist, has traveled the world to research his subjects, but many of his 23 years in the field have been spent on Whidbey Island and various places around the state.
He often uses a sea kayak or floating blind to get up close to the waterfowl to observe and photograph them in their own habitat.
Rulon is the author of five books and his work has been included in field guides and magazines, and displayed in museums around the country.
He teaches natural science illustration at the University of Washington and also works summers as a naturalist aboard Island Adventures whale-watching cruises.
He was recently commissioned to paint the 2013-14 Washington State Duck Stamp.

Thursday’s program begins with social time at 7 p.m., a short meeting at 7:15 and Rulon’s presentation at 7:30.
Cards and matted photos will be for sale.
