GRANITE FALLS — A 17-year-old Granite Falls boy has been charged with felony harassment in connection with several anonymous threats made toward the high school and students there.
The case remains under investigation and the teen could face more charges.
The boy reportedly told detectives that he never intended to carry out any violence. He allegedly admitted that he posted the messages as a way to “express” himself, according to court records.
The Herald is not naming the boy because he is a juvenile.
The threats began appearing in December. Some of the threats named students and others included specific actions, such as detonating a bomb at the school, court papers said.
All of the threats were made via Ask.FM, a social networking website based in Latvia. It allows users to anonymously post a question or statement.
Detectives obtained the Internet protocol address used to send the messages. The address reportedly came back to a house in Granite Falls. The suspect is a student at the high school, court papers said.
Detectives interviewed the boy, who allegedly admitted he was responsible for posting the messages that threatened shootings and bombings at the school. He was arrested last month.
There were no signs of weapons, bombs or bomb-making materials at the boy’s home, police said.
In the meantime, the school district plans a free class focusing on online safety at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the high school’s performing arts center.
