KENT — A 22-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a 96-year-old Seattle-area man with the man’s own gun and bashing the man’s granddaughter a dozen times with a crowbar has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and assault charges.
KOMO-TV reported that Shane Chamberlain entered his pleas Monday. He’s held on $2 million bail in the Jan. 25 attack that killed Philip Hamlin, who was shot as he rested at his home in the south Seattle suburb of Normandy Park. According to court documents, the elderly man’s granddaughter, Bethany Hamlin, was attacked with a crowbar as she vacuumed in her grandfather’s house. She was able to defend herself with a chair and escape to a neighbor’s house.
Police say Chamberlain’s wife worked as Philip Hamlin’s caregiver.
Prosecutors say Chamberlain reported having marital problems and told a 911 dispatcher that’s why he “broke.” He’s due back in court Feb. 24.
