SNOHOMISH — After going through an up-and-down regular season, the Marysville Pilchuck boys basketball team sure picked a good time to play its most complete game.
Facing Glacier Peak, the No. 1 seed from the Wesco 3A South, the fourth-seeded Tomahawks pulled off a stunning upset, beating the Grizzlies 70-49 in the first round of the 3A District 1 Tournament.
“Every coach will tell you that you want to peak at the right team and we definitely did in (this) game,” Tomahawks head coach Bary Gould said. “It’s the best game we played so far (this season).”
The Tomahawks utilized a balanced offense, with four players in double figures, to crack a Glacier Peak defense that held opponents to just 48.5 points per game and was the best in Wesco 3A during the regular season.
Sophomore Josh Bevan knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points, Michael Painter (15 points), Dante Fields (13) and Bryce Juneau (10) also scored in double digits, with Cole Grinde chipping in with nine points.
“We haven’t been that balanced (all season), with four or five players stepping up” Gould said. “We felt really good about the balance and execution.”
Trey Chambers had 14 points and Nick Allan added 10 for Glacier Peak. The Grizzlies led 7-5 with three minutes to play in the first quarter, but the Tomahawks closed out the period on an 8-2 run and never trailed again.
Marysville Pilchuck faces Shorecrest Friday at Jackson H.S. with a berth to regionals on the line. Glacier Peak hosts Everett in a loser-out game on Thursday. At Glacier Peak H.S.
