Stang’s triple-double leads Stanwood to win in district opener

STANWOOD — Drew Stang threw his own block party Tuesday night.

Fortunately he invited the whole town of Stanwood to it as his triple-double, including a school-record 12 blocks, led the Spartans to a 77-61 win over Shorewood in the first round of the 3A District 1 Tournament at Stanwood H.S.

“Just incredible,” said Stanwood head coach Zach Ward of Stang’s performance. “He did everything. The last two games he turned it up even higher. … Just the intensity he’s playing with and the desire. He had a monster dunk on two guys down the lane.”

Stang finished with 25 points, 12 blocks and 11 rebounds as Stanwood had to play a tighter contest with Shorewood as compared to the 78-47 win Stanwood put on the Thunderbirds in the season finale on Wednesday. Stang was 9-for-12 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Stanwood led 54-53 with 5 minutes to play, but a 3-pointer by Josh Thayer ignited a 10-0 run as Stanwood outscored Shorewood 23-8 to end the game.

“The biggest thing was our defensive adjustments,” Ward said of the fourth quarter run.
