Tips suspend two, sign Hart

Two significant pieces of news from Silvertipsland today.

First, Everett has suspended goaltender Daniel Cotton and winger Darcy DeRoose indefinitely for violating team rules. The nature of the rules violation or the length of the suspensions was not disclosed. However, both have been sent home.

Cotton, a 19-year-old from West Vancouver, B.C., has been Everett's No. 2 goaltender since early last season. This season he's 8-4-4-0 with a 3.03 goals against average and .874 save percentage. DeRoose joined the team midseason after being added to Everett's protected list. The 18-year-old from Ceylon, Saskatchewan, has one goal and five assists in 35 games.

The second piece of news is that Everett has officially signed prospect goaltender Carter Hart to a WHL education contract. Hart let the cat out of the bag last week on Twitter, and the Tips made their official announcement today. The 15-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alberta, was an eighth-round pick in last year's bantam draft. This season he's 13-3-3 with a 1.92 goals against average and .937 save percentage with the Sherwood Park NIC Squires of the Alberta Midget Minor Hockey League. He's the first member of Everett's 2013 draft class to sign.

These two stories intersect. Hart was always scheduled to spend this week in Everett practicing with the team. But with Cotton suspended, Hart will now extend his say a few days and serve as the Tips' back-up goaltender during this weekend's three-in-three.

Anyway, it seems fate won't allow Everett to have any healthy scratches. Just when the Tips were getting players back from injury, now they lose two to suspension. It means Everett will once again be stretched during a challenging weekend.
