The first fire was reported at 5:10 p.m. in the 19900 block of Filbert Road, east of Lynnwood, said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1.
Neighbors at the duplex saw smoke coming from the back of the other unit and called 911, she said. A Snohomish County sheriff's deputy was first on scene and pulled a man from the unit where the fire was burning.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, was taken to Swedish/Edmonds hospital. His injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening. His home likely was too damaged for him to return.
The fire was limited to the stovetop area, Hynes said. The other unit in the duplex was not damaged.
"This wasn't a very big fire, but it was smoky," she said.
Because of the evening commute and the layout of the road, the emergency activity clogged traffic for about an hour. Crews also responded from Bothell, Lynnwood and Clearview.
The second fire was reported at 5:30 p.m. at a house in the 600 block of 128th Avenue NE, said Lake Stevens fire battalion Chief Perry Putnam.
"When the fire department arrived, there was heavy black smoke coming from the front door and fire visible through the windows," he said.
The investigation was ongoing Thursday night, but the fire appeared to have started with a kitchen appliance, he said. Two adults and three children got out safely. One dog died in the fire.
The American Red Cross was called to help those displaced.
The damage to the Lake Stevens-area home was estimated at more than $10,000.
