OLYMPIA — Republican Sen. Janea Holmquist Newbry says she’s forming an exploratory committee for a potential run to replace U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, who announced this week that he’ll be retiring at the end of the year.
Holmquist Newbry sent out a news release Friday announcing her interest in the seat, and says she will be visiting with leaders through the 4th Congressional District to “assess the viability of my candidacy.”
The chairwoman of the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee was elected to the Senate in 2006. She previously served in the House, after being elected in 2001.
Holmquist, who lives in Moses Lake, has appointed several advisers to the exploratory committee, including Yakima Mayor Micah Cawley.
