Edmonds Woodway jumped to a 8-2 lead and held an 11-4 edge midway through the first quarter, but the Royals woke up and did not let up the rest of the way in a 43-26 victory in a 4A District 1 Tournament semifinal game at Mountlake Terrace H.S.
Lynnwood advances to Friday’s District 1 championship at Glacier Peak H.S. at 6 p.m.
“We were a little bit tight,” Lynnwood coach Everett Edwards said of the early deficit. “Edmonds Woodway came out shooting well and it messed with our confidence a bit.”
Mikayla Pivec sparked the Royals, scoring six of her game-high 15 points in the first quarter and pulling the team to within 12-10 at the end of the quarter.
“Mikayla was outstanding.” Edwards said. “She really carried us in that first quarter.”
It was only the second time Lynnwood trailed after the first quarter this year.
After a bucket with nine seconds to play in the first half, the Lynnwood defense held the Warriors scoreless for more than nine minutes. E-W’s Mady Burdett broke the drought with a 3 early in the fourth quarter to make the score 39-18 in favor of Lynnwood.
The Warriors made just nine field goals, but Moni Jackson’s four 3s paced the team. She finished with 13 points.
Edmonds Woodway travels to Snohomish on Tuesday night in the first of potentially three consecutive loser-out contests to advance to the 4A state tournament.
