CAMANO ISLAND — Two men remained hospitalized Tuesday after one of them shot the other on Camano Island and then was shot by police after a high-speed chase that ended in Mukilteo.
Island County sheriff’s detectives are investigating the shooting on Camano Island on Sunday as a case of first-degree assault, Sheriff Mark Brown said. The suspect, 34, is accused of shooting a handgun at a man and woman who were sitting in a parked vehicle.
The male victim, 44, was shot in the head and neck, and he was listed in critical condition over the weekend. The female victim was shot in the arm and treated and released from a Skagit County hospital.
Investigators believe the trio all knew each other before the shooting, at least as acquaintances, Brown said Tuesday.
The two men, who were both taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, both have invoked their rights not to have the hospital release any more information about their conditions, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday.
The vehicle was impounded as evidence. Island County detectives don’t expect to release much more information until after a search warrant is served on the car, Brown said.
“Everything else is being gathered as we speak,” he said. “What we’re trying to do is put together witness information with evidence at the scene to draw a conclusion as to what happened.”
The Camano Island shooting was reported to police within minutes and information about the suspected gunman was broadcast. His vehicle was spotted outside Stanwood and chased into Mukilteo. Shots were fired during the arrest and the man was critically wounded.
Police have not yet said whether the suspect fired at officers. They did recover a firearm that they believe was his, according to a news release Tuesday.
No police were injured in the incident.
The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team. The team includes detectives from around the county who probe cases where police use potentially fatal force.
The suspect likely will face charges in both Snohomish and Island counties, Brown said.
The Camano Island shooting was reported about 3:15 p.m, he said.
The officer-involved shooting happened about 3:50 p.m. at the intersection of 88th Street SW and 53rd Avenue W.
