The collision occurred around 6:30 a.m. on S. Lake Stevens Road.
Medics evaluated the bus driver and two Cavelero Mid-High School students who were on the bus at the time. District officials said the boys were both 14 and in the eighth grade. They were uninjured.
The crash closed S Lake Stevens Road between 15th Street SE and 113th Avenue SE.
The man and woman in the SUV are believed to be in their late 20s or early 30s. She received significant injuries, Lake Stevens police Cmdr. Dennis Taylor said. The man’s injuries were considered minor.
The school bus was traveling east and the SUV was westbound when the SUV apparently crossed the center line and struck the bus, Taylor said.
“There is physical evidence that leads us to believe drugs and alcohol could have been a factor,” Taylor said. “Neither of the two vehicles was drivable.”
The principal at Cavelero Mid-High quickly was able to reach the crash scene to be with the students. Their parents were able to board the bus to be with them when they were being evaluated by medics, school district spokeswoman Jayme Taylor said.
As is standard procedure in cases involving school bus accidents, the district through its insurance pool will conduct a separate review of the crash.
The bus driver has worked for the school district for eight years.
