MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — The new concrete firefighters memorial outside Fire Station 19 in Mountlake Terrace is the work of local Eagle Scout Ray Baldwin.
Baldwin, a senior at Lynnwood High School, earned his Eagle Scout rank in a ceremony Jan. 25.
He wanted an Eagle Scout project that would last and have meaning, he said.
“It’s that feeling of being able to do something bigger,” he said.
He met with the Mountlake Terrace city parks folks, who took him to all the local parks, including the firefighters memorial.
To make the new memorial, Baldwin used concrete and rebar.
“I had to go to several different council meetings to decide what everyone wanted the memorial to look like,” he said.
The plaque from the old memorial was attached to the new one. The plaque honors Mountlake Terrace firefighters who have died in years past.
Fire Capt. Don Navarre worked closely with Baldwin on the project. Navarre died in January, and his name is expected to be added to the plaque, fire Capt. Thad Hovis said.
Donors to Baldwin’s project included Astrof Concrete, of Everett, the Rotary Club of Alderwood-Terrace, Dave’s Transmission, Cascade Trophy and Budget Tank Removal.
Baldwin, who’s with Troop 304, plans to study business at Edmonds Community College.
