Outdoor events: K2 movie, paddling, snowboarding for kids, more

Lynx and hare: Learn about lynx and snowshoe hare at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Northwest Stream Center. Researcher Aaron Wirsing will tell what he’s learned about these interesting species. The event is $5 for members and $7 for nonmembers. Get more info here.

Himalayas: See a screening of the film K2-Siren of the Himalayas on Thursday at the Mountaineers center in Seattle. The documentary tells the story of K2, a mountain where for every four people who have reached the summit, one has died trying. The film will be introduced by Jim Wickwire, the first American to summit K2. Get more info here.

Paddle: Take a paddle with the North Sound Sea Kayaking Association through the sloughs of the Snohomish River Delta on Saturday. Cold weather and immersion gear are a must. Get more info here.

Author: Bill Dietrich, an author who focuses on environmental issues, will speak about forest issues at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rockport State Park. The talk will be followed by a guided tour of the park’s trails.

Kids snowboarding: Kids between 3 and 6 years old can try out snowboarding on Saturday and Sunday at Stevens Pass. The boards and the terrain are designed for young kids. Get more info here.

Snow geese: The Port Susan Snow Goose and Birding Festival is Saturday and Sunday in Stanwood. There will be classes, field trips, an art show and activities for kids. Get more info here.

Run: The Lord Hill Train Run is Sunday at Lord Hill Regional Park in Snohomish. There are four distances: 5 miles, 10 miles, 20 miles and 50k. Get more info and register here. The race is nearly full, so sign up soon if you want to run it.

Beach: Take a starlight beach walk at Mukilteo Lighthouse Park on Feb. 26. The walk is from to 7-8:30 p.m. A naturalist will guide the walk and talk about what you find. Dress for the weather, wear waterproof shoes and bring a flashlight. Get more info here.

Ocean: Everett Community College’s ORCA program will host an information session at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at its waterfront location, 1205 Craftsman Way, Suite 203, in Everett. Visitors and prospective students can see student work, meet faculty members, learn about the program and see the facility, including the oceanography research lab and 120-gallon seawater tank. Expo: The Northwest Outdoor Adventure Expo is Feb. 28-March 2 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. There will be discussions, slide shows, music and indoor adventures such as a zip line and paddle pool. There will also be a variety of outdoor vendors. Get more info here.

Bikes: The Seattle Bicycle Expo is March 1-2. There will be more than 175 vendors, how-to presentations, panels and expert demos. Get more info here.

Go paddling: The Washington Water Trails Association will offer a guided paddle on March 1 on the Sammamish River. Attendees will meet in Woodinville and then paddle or row to Red Hook Brewery and enjoy lunch before returning. Get more info here.

Slimy: Learn all about the fascinating stories of slugs and snails at 7 p.m. March 6 at Northwest Stream Center in Everett. This event is PG-13. No, really. Slugs and snails are more fascinating than you might think and the event is not for little kids. It’s $5 for members or $7 for non-members. Register in advance by calling 425-316-8592. Extreme: The Radical Reels Tour, featuring extreme sports, is March 6 at the Mountaineers in Seattle. Get more info and tickets here.

Snow: The Spree at Alpental is March 8. It’s for skiers, boarders and snowshoers. There will be races, gear demos and more. It’s a fundraiser for Outdoors for All. Get more info here.

Bears: Learn all about bears at the Northwest Stream Center at McCollum Park at 1 p.m. on March 8. Learn about bear biology and how to stay safe in bear country. You’ll also get a chance to meet two Karelian bear dogs. Get more info here.

Impressive: Listen to Heather Anderson, who set a record for the fastest known time for hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, speak on March 11 in Bellingham. She will speak at 7:30 p.m. at Backcountry Essentials, 214 W. Holly St., Bellingham.

Birds: The Wings Over Water birding festival is March 14-16 in Blaine. There are both indoor and outdoor events. Most of the event is free, although field trips to Semiahmoo Spit or Drayton Harbor are $5. Get more info here.
